An environmental storytelling event: The Animals’ Complaint Against Humanity

The Animals’ Complaint Against Humanity is a story originally written by the Ikhwan as-Safa, a group of Islamic philosophers, in the tenth century. In their tale, a group of humans become shipwrecked upon an island uninhabited by humans. The humans make a settlement upon the island and quickly begin to oppress and abuse the animals. The animals make a complaint against the humans to the King of the Jinn. What follows is a fascinating story about the meaning of being human and our responsibility towards nature. In this contemporary retelling, the story is relocated to Ontario’s Boreal Forest to help us reflect on Islamic teachings about wildlife conservation in this region. Join us for a magical evening of storytelling. This presentation is for adults and children (8+).

WHERE:Canadian Sufi Cultural Centre

Celebration of the life of Willem Poolman

Dr. Willem (AbdurRahim Baba) Poolman, a respected brother of ours, was the head of the Bawa Muhaiyadeen Fellowship in Canada, an immigration lawyer and a kind human being.

He passed away on Sunday June 7 at the age of 86.

Many of the dervishes have attended the gatherings he hosted, and we've always enjoyed his hospitality and friendship. Last year, we celebrated the anniversary of Bawa Muhaiyadeen’s visit to Canada with him with several dervishes attending. His gatherings were fellowships of zikr, warmth, and Divine Love with the blessings of Bawa Muhaiyadeen.

Event FlyerWhirling Into Peace, March 2007

For the first time in Canada, we proudly presented "Whirling Into Peace", a festival of Sufi Music, Whirling Dervishes, and the Poetry of Rumi, with a special guest appearance by the renowned Turkish Sufi Musician Ahmet Ohzan and his 10-piece orchestra.

Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi, born in the year 1207 in Afghanistan, was an accomplished scholar and teacher of the religious sciences. Rumi went on to become the greatest mystical poet of all time. By communicating the absolute love of God through his works, he has attracted spiritual seekers from almost every religious and spiritual path in the world for hundreds of years.

Through this event, we honoured Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi through the ancient practice of whirling, performed by dervishes of the Mevlevi Sufi Order founded by Rumi in the 13th century. Furthermore, we celebrated Rumi's inspiring works through the recitation of his poetry.

Ahmet Ozhan is considered an exceptional singer and a leading representative of the Turkish classical Sufi music tradition. Since undergoing training by masters in the fields of western and oriental classical music, he has risen to the status of an internationally acclaimed performer of traditional Sufi music. Today, he is a celebrity and well-known leader in the art of Sufi music throughout Europe, the US and the Middle East where he performs with his orchestra consisting of traditional instruments such as the ney, ud and bendir.
