Through Love all that is bitter becomes sweet,
Through Love all that is copper becomes gold.
Through Love all dregs will turn to purest wine;
Through Love all pain becomes medicine.
Through Love the dead become alive,
Through Love the king becomes a slave.
- Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi
I am a bird of the heavenly garden,
I belong not to the earthly sphere.
They have made for two or three days,
A cage of my body.
- Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi
The presence of a friend of God
is a book, and even more.
The book of the Sufi is not written
With ink and letters,
it is only a heart,
White like snow.
- Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi
Happy are they who, calm and content, give praise to God alone;
Constant in remembrance and in prayer, pure light they shall become.
If anyone so loves the Truth that he speaks the Truth always,
Wisdom shall be his, and ultimate forgiveness he shall own.
Higher than the Throne the hearts of those who say that God is One;
They catch a glimpse of it and circle dizzily around.
Do not frown at the sight of a beggar in humble attire;
Those accustomed to arrogance will finally be despised.
Do not lose the delight of Love's ocean for this world's sake;
Do not become a distant stranger, far removed from God.
This poem of Sheikh Nureddin, Qutb, is to Azmi addressed;
Happy are they who pass on, from one above to the Next.
- Pir Nureddin al-Jerrahi (raa)
Your heart is a polished mirror.
You must wipe it clean of the veil of dust that has gathered upon it,
because it is destined to reflect the light of divine secrets.
- Imam al-Ghazali
Go you, sweep out the dwelling room of your heart,
prepare it to be the home of the Beloved.
When you go out, He will come in.
Within you, when you are free from self,
He will show His Beauty.
- Shabistari
Truth has been planted in the center of your heart,
entrusted to you by God for safekeeping.
It becomes manifest with true repentance and with true effort.
Its beauty shines on the surface when you remember God
and do the dhikr (recitation of Divine Names).
At the first stage you recite the name of God with your tongue;
then, when your heart becomes alive,
you recite it inwardly with the heart.
- Abdul Qadir al-Jilani
